Summer Sour Series

This week starts the beginning of the Summer Sour Series from Couple o' Brews! We're focusing on four different sour variants from local breweries around town! Sours, specifically Berliner Weisse styles, are perfect for the hot summer months, because they are refreshing and tart like lemonade. Perfect for kayaking, hiking, boating, or whatever your favorite summertime activity.  We'll be posting a video every two weeks, so stay tuned!

Each of these breweries featured, are in Henderson, and all of the four videos are filmed out at Lake Mead! We had a blast kayaking and filming. We had issues with the wind and many times while filming it was total garbage. What was fun was filming in the kayaks and we kept floating away with the current. Too silly. There's an island we kayaked to, that's one of those pop ups after the water levels had lowered, and it was perfect for docking and relaxing.

Queen of Hearts

First up, we have the Queen of Hearts Berliner Weisse, from Bad Beat Brewing.  Bad Beat is a local brewery in Henderson in an area called the Henderson Booze District.  This area includes Bad Beat, Crafthaus, Las Vegas Distillery, Vegas Brewing Co., and Grape Expecations.  Bad Beat is coming up on it's 3rd Anniversary and has a big focus on canning. You may have seen their core beers at your local grocery store, but they are always featured on tap at local pubs around town. They frequently release specialty beers for the season, or bring back versions of previous limited release beers.  One of those limited releases is the Queen of Hearts Berliner Weisse. A Berliner Weisse has a lower alcohol content so it's super sessionable especially in the hot sun.  It is a sour white beer, brewed with lactic acid that gives it that tart flavor. Bad Beat's version is true to form of the style.

Zitrone

Next, we have the Zitrone from Crafthaus. I mentioned Crafthaus in a previous blog about Idaho but just a recap, they're awesome.  Plus, they frequently have Booze Yoga in their taproom and it's a total blast.  The Zitrone that we're featuring is a Gose style ale.  This style has a low to moderate alcohol content. There is a lemon-like tartness with a slight salinity.  Some Goses are extremely salty and over powering, but the Zitrone has a bit of salinity with a refreshing finish.

Joseph James Berliner Weisse

Third on the list, is the duo of the Joseph James Berliner Weisses.  Joseph James released two this summer, the Blood Orange Cranberry and the Passionfruit Guava.  Both are so refreshing but Justin and I have a split decision.  I love the Passionfruit Guava and he is all about that Blood Orange Cranberry.  These two are a bit more juicy and the fruit additives make it super easy to drink.  Joseph James doesn't have a tap room but their cans and bottles can be found in grocery stores and bottle shops around town.  We bought these two beers at Khoury's Wine and Spirits, who carry quite a few different Joseph James brews.

9th Island Pineapple Sour

The finale to the Summer Sour Series is the 9th Island Pineapple Sour from Lovelady Brewing.  Lovelady is on Water Street in Downtown Henderson. This is a family owned brewery started by brothers, Richard and Robert Lovelady.  They have roots in Henderson and decided to bring their life long love of beer to their hometown of Henderson.  The 9th Island is a golden kettle sour that has pineapple puree added.  It has a tart quality that finishes sweet from the pineapple.

Feel free to pick up a few of these beers to try out!! All of these are perfect for summer and can be found at Khoury's, your local grocery store, or at each of their tap rooms. Subscribe to our YouTube channel and check out our videos every two weeks!
